Creating Advanced User Interfaces with STM32 Microcontrollers

Mike Hartmann - Soren Mikkelsen - STMicroelectronics - Watch Now - Duration: 01:53:18

In today's fast-paced and interactive world, it is necessary for technology to provide a simple and compelling experience to the end user.

Through advancements in graphics software frameworks and embedded technology and integration, this can be easily achieved with the STM32 microcontrollers. In this 2-hour hands-on workshop, you will be introduced to the STM32 Microcontrollers with advanced graphics technology. You will be introduced to graphics software frameworks and tools, and get hands-on experience using the STM32H7B3I-DK discovery kit with the latest STM32H7 microcontroller and the TouchGFX Designer tool.

Workshop Agenda:

  1. Advanced Graphics with STM32 Microcontrollers
  2. STM32 Graphics Software and Tools
  3. Hands-on: Quick Start with STM32H7B3I-DK Board
  4. STM32 Graphics Ecosystem and Support
  5. Hands-on: Custom Project Start with STM32 + TouchGFX

Note: The STM32H7B3I-DK board will be available at a discounted cost of $20.00 excluding shipping and handling fee to the first 100 registrants using a business email address. An email with a dedicated board link to Digi-Key Electronics website will be provided.

Could you please help me out? I got stucked on the first simulation example. The GUI won't start with the "Run Simulator" button. It is shown as a failed operation and in the detailed log appears the following message:

`Generate Assets
    make -f simulator/gcc/Makefile assets -j8
          0 [main] us 0 init_cheap: VirtualAlloc pointer is null, Win32 error 487
    AllocationBase 0x1340000, BaseAddress 0x1540000, RegionSize 0x1201000, State 0x2000
    C:\TouchGFX\4.13.0\env\MinGW\msys\1.0\bin\sh.exe: *** Couldn't reserve space for cygwin's heap, Win32 error 0
    make: *** [assets] Error 1
simulator/gcc/Makefile:32: recipe for target 'assets' failed
    Failed
Failed`

Before that message the word "Done" with other details is displayed so I thought this could be the only error.

Thanks for your attention. I?m looking forward to your reply.

Hi Axel,
This appears to be a msys error, not specifically related to ST or TouchGFX. Check out this thread on ST's Community Forums: LINK
The original poster found that rebasing solved the issue. If you have further issues, feel free to post in the forums there, as they are regularly monitored by ST engineers and a wide range of expert community members.

Hello, I enjoyed your presentation. I get the impression that TouchGFX will replace STemwin, but there was no comparison of the pros and cons of each. TouchGFX seems more suited to high end mobile applications and STemWin more towards the low end basic UI. When I tried TouchGFX, it seemed straightforward using the designer for Eval or Discovery boards. But I couldn’t find any clear documentation how to get started, or what the workflow is using Nucleo or custom boards connected to an SPI display. The CubeMX addon felt a bit clunky compared with the designer.

Thanks for your comments. You are right, there are other graphics frameworks available for STM32 microcontrollers. We wanted to focus on TouchGFX and provide ample time for the hands-on portion. Other options are STemWin (as you mention), Crank, Qt, Embedded Wizard, LittleVGL, etc. Specific to TouchGFX, support.touchgfx.com is a great place to get started. There is a section on using the TouchGFX Generator plug-in in CubeMX (under Development->TouchGFX AL Development->Generator User Guide). The process is more involved than the quick start GUI prototyping with TouchGFX Designer and a Discovery board.

Hi, how can I get the STM32H7B3I-DK for the discounted rate of $20?

Hi...thanks for the interest. The discounted rate was only available for a limited quantity to early registrations for the Embedded Online Conference. This, and many other graphics related STM32 Discovery kits are available at their normal affordable prices. If you have a specific project in mind, reach out to your local distributor or ST sales representative.
