Operating Systems for Embedded Applications

Colin Walls - Watch Now - Duration: 56:47

Most modern embedded applications employ and operating system of some sort. We will look at how operating systems work - the scheduler and various services provided by an OS to the application code - and at the options open for OS selection. We will also compare the use of commercial, open source and in-house products.

Great presentation, thanks a lot. It helped me to remember/understand the details of the Round-Robin with priorities RTOS we used in the late 1980s. I'm definitely interested in your book and will follow your blog. Thanks

Such a tool would, I guess, be quite useful, but I have not seen a product like this for many years. SOrry.

Great presentation!!! Thanks a lot.
I am an embedded software, but still on bare metal world. Tiny uCs with a quite simple SW. As I am interested in playing with embedded OS, and I have a TM4C1294 launchpad board, what RTOS would you recommend to start with?

For that CPU, you would need something small. I assume that to "play", you do not plan on spending any money? There are a few open source RTOSes around. Alternatively, you might be interested in my book [due Oct] that includes code for a simple RTOS. There is also the RTOS Revealed series of articles on embedded.com

Thanks a lot for the feedback. Sure, I am looking forward to have a look into your book. Meanwhile, it would be like you said, just to "play", without any specific goal, unless learning and gain experience.
Cheers.

Good presentation. A bit more on multi-core RTOS would have made it perfect.

Thank you. Multicore is important, I agree, but it is a big subject and deserves its own sessions. You can find some here: https://www.mentor.com/embedded-software/multimedia/#?filter=&start=1&limit=9
